Elegance of a Ditch exhibition

Elegance of a Ditch exhibition opens 22.7.2025 at the Naantalin taidehuone.

Now you can see me

We look for beauty from vanishing untouched nature. We give value to nature with our eyes and seek for something breathtaking, something big, predefined beauty and value. The beauty of nature is all around us, even close by and unnoticeable, vanishing and fleeting. In nature, everything has its place, its own personality and its own story.

Elegance of a Ditch exhibition celebrates nature’s imperceptible beauty in ditches, roadsides, banks of ponds and wastelands. These burst with life, seizing the moment, and radiate life’s fleeting elegance. With my photographs I want to give my subjects a possibility to be seen.

Exhibition is open 22.7.–10.8.2025.

“For me taking photographs is a form of storytelling. It’s my love story to the world and my way to see the world deeper.”

“I want to speak for nature’s intrinsic value and imperceptible beauty and to increase the appreciation of nature with my photographs. Nature gives strength and perspective to life. We are part of nature. Diverse and healthy nature is also an investment to our own wellbeing.”

Finding inspiration, plain and simple beauty and the joy of discovery. Stories behind the photographs. From Finland and around the world.

Beauty of imperfection

Wilted plant under water. Photographer Kati Kalkamo.

I love the vast landscapes and majestic views, these give perspective to one’s own life. But what really makes me tick, is the beauty of imperfection and fleeting time. Nothing compares to finding beauty in ordinary and plain sights and details. You can find me most enthusiastic with my camera in the front of wilted plants, twigs and seemingly insignificant debris and trash. These keep me grounded, keep me in the present and accepting and rejoicing the everlasting change.

Imagination of ice

Ice formations - Photographer Kati Kalkamo

This winter has been moody in Southwest Finland. The weather has been constantly changing. Temperatures have been mostly mild which lead to short period of supporting ice cover. However, at the same time this winter has been great to enjoy nature’s own art form of imaginative and inspiring ice formations.

Now only memories remain from ice and photographs that support the memories.
